I've been messing with this for several weeks, keeping some rough statistics as the bot worked. I used multiple setups configured as diversely as I could make them. Here's my results and I am very surprised...
By far the best strategy is volume attack with cheap troops and no trophy restrictions. I use 100,000 limit on gold and elixer and 500 on dark and let it match on any of them using dead bases only. Day in and day out this gives the biggest reward over time. I have a 60/40 split of barb/archer and they replenish about as fast as the king and queen.
I've tried going dragons, giants, all kinds of strategies but what hurts them is the time between attacks. Roughly speaking it doesn't matter the composition of your army, you end up winning about the same percentage of battles (again over time). Once you reach your natural trophy range for your given army you'll win about as many times as any other army.
Taking that fact into consideration it becomes clear that you need to fight as many battles as possible with as low a cost of the army as possible. Even if my average is 150,000 gold/elixer and your army averages 300,000 I'm able to battle way more over the course of several days with the added benefit of never losing dark elixer.
Yeah, it's boring and you don't get to see cool troops being used but I'm constantly trying to figure out how to use my banked resources so my collectors can keep working. Give it a try for a few days and you'll be surprised at what barb/archer can do when given time and space to work.
